A British jihadist was held for a month by Turkish authorities before being handed over to Islamic State in a mass prisoner swap, despite an appeal by UK diplomats for information to trace his whereabouts.

Shabazz Suleman, 19, told The Times that he and dozens of fellow captives were allowed to contact Isis via the internet from their cells while Turkish security services arranged the trade, and that police holding him expressed sympathy with his cause.

Speaking for the first time since he was part of the clandestine deal, Suleman claimed that at least 200 Isis recruits were traded for 49 Turkish consular staff, who had been captured when Mosul, in northern Iraq, fell to Isis.

“I had the option to get deported and not
